Hands on training on Pest surveillance and Pest diagnostics for Burundi NPPO, 14th to 18th October, 2013 at KEPHIS Headquarters, Nairobi, Kenya.

COPE together with UNIDO; organized one week training on pest diagnosis and surveillance for Burundi NPPO, the main objective was to acquire hands-on skills on pest surveillance and diagnostic systems in Kenya.

 

This pest surveillance course was attended by 14 trainees from Burundi. Since it was a hands on training, the trainees had first a theory session introducing them to what they were going to be trained on thereafter they visited one of the sites KEPHIS is doing pest surveillance on Bactocera invadens in Kandara Murang’a County against avocados. Here the participants engaged in the actual work on the ground; they were able to set fruit fly traps and collected pest samples in the field for use in the laboratory hands on training. At the end of the course, the trainees were evaluated and scored in the exam an average score of 65 %, the trainees received a certificate of completion.

In conclusion, at the end of the training, the trainees appreciated being trained in KEPHIS/COPE and said that they had gained more knowledge and would apply the knowledge they have gained in their respective stations in Burundi.
