Inaugural COPE Training Course on the Application of Phytosanitary Measures: 4th to 15th July 2011

The inaugural Centre for Phytosanitary Excellence (COPE) course was held from 4th to 15th July 2011 at the Kenya Plant Health Inspection Service (KEPHIS) headquarters. It was officially opened by Prof. Mwangombe Principal, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, University of Nairobi with Dr. James M. Onsando, Managing Director, KEPHIS being present.  The two week course on “application of Phytosanitary measures”, the first in a series to be taught during the year, aimed to build capacity phytosanitary capacity for nine students drawn from the Horticultural Crops Development Authority, Moi University, KEL Horticultural Exporters, Anirack Ltd and KEPHIS. The course covered Relevant International treaties; Standard setting procedures; Phytosanitary systems evaluation (PCE) for implementation of selected standards; Import regulation, PRA & PRA tools; Non-compliance and market access; Private standards; International and regional support for Phytosanitary capacity building; Bio-security and invasive alien species; Important Phytosanitary/trade issues in the region.
