Phytosanitary training for Nyandarua West farmers, 20th November, 2014 at Oljororok PCEA Church Hall.

 

Oljororok in Nyandarua West has a number of small scale farmers growing cut flowers among other crops for export. In the recent past there has been an increase in interceptions of Kenya`s agricultural produce at major entry points on account of harmful organisms on these crops. In this regard, the Sub-County Agricultural office Nyandarua West made a request for training of farmers on Phytosanitary scheduled for 20th November 2014 at Oljororok PCEA Church hall. Fifty two farmers were trained during the one day course that focused on good agricultural practices.

Training of Farmers on grading of sweet potatoes for export at Kiptere Emmaus AGC, Kericho County on 13th November 2014

Kericho County organized a training for 54 growers from the Sigowet Sweet Potato Farmers Group on 13th November, 2014 at Kiptere Emmaus AGC, Kericho County. The Sigowet Sweet Potato Farmers Group is selling through an exporter called SACOMA from Kendu Bay to the UK. They have been selling 1 to 2 tons of fresh sweet potatoes every week for the last one year. The training focused on sorting, cleaning, grading and packaging produce for export.

Study Tour for Staff of Plant Protection and Regulatory services, Ghana, 7thJuly to 11thJuly 2014

The National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) of Ghana which is Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD) nominated two of its officers to visit Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), Kenya’s National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) from 7th July to 11th July 2014.

COPE together with EAPIC organized the first e-learning course on Introduction to International Treaties and Standards in Phytosanitary Systems and Pest Risk Analysis from 19th May 2014 to 13th June 2014

PRA training for Swaziland NPPO, 9th to 12th December, 2013 in Mbabane, Swaziland.

The Centre Of Phytosanitary Excellence (COPE) in conjunction with FANRPAN together with Harmonized Seed Security Project (HaSSP) organized a three day training workshop on Pest Risk Analysis at Mbabane, Swaziland on the 9th to 12th December 2013.This PRA course was attended by 18 trainees from various institutions and stakeholders in Agriculture, Swaziland through theory classes and practical hands-on training on PRA. The trainees together with the guidance of the trainers from COPE/KEPHIS and DARSS (Swaziland NPPO) developed pest list of maize

PRA training for Zimbabwe NPPO, 10th to 12th December, 2013 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

COPE together with FANRPAN organized a three day workshop in Zimbabwe on 10th to 12th December, 2013 at Mandel Training Centre, Harare. where the NPPO staff of Zimbabwe were sensitized on PRA. The specific training objectives were:To create awareness on the importance of pest risk analysis in phytosanitary systems; To sensitize participants on the sources of PRA information; To understand the various steps in PRA process and to enhance skills in the use of PRA tools.

PRA training for Zambia NPPO, 3rd to 5th December, 2013 in Lusaka, Zambia.

COPE together with FANRPAN organized a three day workshop in Zambia where the NPPO staff of Zambia were sensitized on PRA. This three day course took 17 trainees from Zambia Agricultural Research Organization theory classes and practical hands-on training on PRA. The course covered principles of PRA, sources of PRA information, Tools for PRA and stages in PRA. As part of the practical training participants were introduced to PRA CPC software as a tool for conducting PRA. In addition participants participated in developing a draft PRA for importation of bean Phaseolus vulgaris seed from Malawi, Swaziland and Zimbabwe into Zambia.

PRA training for Malawi NPPO, 26th to 28th November, 2013 in Lilongwe, Malawi.

COPE together with FANRPAN organized a three day workshop in Malawi where the NPPO staff of Malawi were sensitized on PRA.This three day course took 16 trainees from the Department of Agricultural Research Services, Plant Protection Division through theory classes and practical hands-on training on PRA.

Hands on training on Pest surveillance and Pest diagnostics for Burundi NPPO, 14th to 18th October, 2013 at KEPHIS Headquarters, Nairobi, Kenya.

COPE together with UNIDO; organized one week training on pest diagnosis and surveillance for Burundi NPPO, the main objective was to acquire hands-on skills on pest surveillance and diagnostic systems in Kenya.

TRAINING ON PRODUCTION AND CERTIFICATION OF CLEAN PLANTING MATERIAL, HELD IN KEPHIS- PLANT QUARANTINE STATION, 7TH – 18TH OCTOBER, 2013.

The Centre of Phytosanitary Excellence (COPE) in conjunction Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute (MARI) organized a two week hands on training workshop for two of its members of staff on Virus indexing and certification of clean planting material from 7th to 18th October 2013.
