The Centre of Phytosanitary Excellence (COPE) in conjunction COMESA ACTESA organized a three day theoretical training workshop for sixty five participants five from each COMESA state on COMESA variety release system. In the year 2014 KEPHIS received communication from the European Union in regard to increased interception attributed to presence of harmful organisms and incomplete or missing additional declaration. KEPHIS was required to put in place strategies and measures to arrest or reduce the number of interceptions in the destination market.

Study tour of Ethiopia agricultural officials on Agro Dealer registration and inspection, 30th and 31st March, 2016 at KEPHIS Headquarters

COPE received a request from Africa Tranformation Agency in Ethiopia to organize a visit to KEPHIS by delegates from Ethiopia. The main purpose of their visit is to learn the regulatory activities in regard to agro-dealer inspection services. the delagates were taken through theory classes on seed merchants registration and insopection.


Tuta absoluta is an insect pest of tomato and other solanaceae crops. The leaf miner can cause uptp 100% of yield reduction to tomato production. International trading stimulated the spread of T. absoluta from South America to Asia, Europe and Africa. There was the urgent need of knowledge on how to deal with the highly harmful insect due to its imerging nature.
